Introduction of the Chief Lama of Shang Choling Monastery
The Chief Lama of Shang Choling Monastery is(Lopen) Sange Legden Gurung. He was born on July 23, 1986 in Jamuna, Ilam District, Nepal (former Ward No. 1). From a young age, he showed a deep interest in spirituality, discipline, and devotion to religion.

He completed his primary education at the local Bhanudaya Basic School in Ilam. Due to his strong faith and interest in Buddhism from childhood, he joined the Palyul Urgen Dorjee Choling Buddhist Study Center in Pharping in 2000. under the guidance of his respected गुरु, H.E. Khen Rinpoche Sange Rangjung.

There, he deeply studied Himalayan Mahayana Buddhism and successfully completed higher religious education up to the Master’s level (Lopen/Acharya). He gained strong knowledge in Buddhist philosophy, meditation practices, scriptures, and traditional rituals.

Along with his academic studies, he also completed the very important Vajrayana practice known as the “Three Years, Three Months Retreat”, which is considered a highly advanced and serious spiritual training in Buddhism. This retreat helps practitioners reach deeper levels of meditation, realization, and spiritual development.

After being promoted to Shastra Acharya and natra. Vajracharya, he is respectfully known as Acharya / Lopen. At present, Lopen Sange Legden Gurung is actively involved in meditation practice, spiritual guidance, and religious teaching. He continues to contribute to society through various religious and social organizations by promoting Buddhism and serving the community.

Currently, he serves as the Chairman and Chief Lama of Shang Choling Monastery. In addition, he is the Chairman of the Pharping Monastery Association, a former Central Member of the Nepal Buddhist Federation, and the Founding Vice-Chairman of the Gurung Lama Tamu Buddhist Society, among other roles.

With the aim of spreading the teachings of Buddhism, he has conducted religious programs, teachings, and spiritual guidance across different regions of Nepal. Furthermore, he has actively promoted Buddhism internationally through visits to countries such as India, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Indonesia.

Lopen Sange Legden Gurung is deeply devoted to the path of Buddhism, meditation, compassion, loving-kindness, and wisdom. His dedication, practice, and service continue to contribute significantly to spreading spiritual awareness, peace, and harmony in society
